Kirkland Middle has been accepted into the King County Green Schools Program, a conservation program that provides assistance and tools to schools to reduce their environmental footprint. As part of this program, the school -- led by counselor Katie McCain and in collaboration with the PTSA Wellness Committee – is forming a Green Team of students, staff and parents who are working to implement three levels of conservation: waste reduction and recycling; energy conservation; and water conservation and pollution reduction.
The Green Team’s efforts kicked off on Earth Day, April 22, with a presentation about waste reduction to students during Panther Time. This week, students are practicing trash sorting in a friendly competition to see which lunch period creates the least amount of garbage by correctly sorting compost and recycling.
The Green Team needs more volunteers! If you or your student are interested in joining, please contact Katie McCain (kmccain@lwsd.org) or Kim Lowe (kdlowe69@hotmail.com).
