Wellness Tip: 5 Ways to Support a Healthier School

We all want our school to be a safe and healthy place for our kids. Here are five ways you can support healthy choices at KiMS:

1. CHEERLEAD HEALTHY LUNCH AND SNACKS
Whether your child buys lunch or brings it from home, always encourage healthy choices like fresh veggies and fruits, whole grains, quality proteins, nuts and seeds. Studies show that eating with classmates can influence kids’ acceptance of foods, so a lunchroom full of real, whole foods can start a flywheel of healthy eating.

2. ACTIVELY PROMOTE ACTIVITY
Are you promoting your child’s participation in intramural sports? Encouraging vigorous activity after school? Countless studies prove the more active kids are, the more focused they tend to be in the classroom.

3. CELEBRATE HEALTHY
Achievements are for celebrating! But kids don’t need sugary rewards for every accomplishment. Give non-food rewards like gift cards or special outings, and promote non-food rewards at school.

4. JOIN THE WELLNESS COMMITTEE
The KiMS PTSA is forming a Wellness Committee to promote healthy choices at school. If wellness is important to you, this is a great way to share your knowledge and make an impact. Email Kim Lowe (kdlowe69@hotmail.com) for info.

5. KEEP IT UP, WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING!
You work hard every day creating a healthy home, and you can influence the same for our school. Share your ideas, ask other parents for help, and thank the KiMS staff and teachers for all they do to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our kids.
